Dental hygiene for kids

Video Transcript

A lot of our adult patients ask when is a good time to bring the child to see a dental hygienist.

It’s important to remember that a child’s hygiene visit will be very different to an adult’s hygiene visit.

And we’ll always customise the visit to the patient that’s in the chair.

It’s important to remember that they won’t be having a scan and clean that you might be familiar with as an adult but they will have a polish and have fluoride applied to help prevent tooth decay.

It’s about exposing them to the environment the flavours, the taste, the sounds.

And at the same time being able to remove plaque discuss plaque, encourage brushing show them how to brush and answer any questions that you might have as parent or guardian about your child’s oral hygiene.

So keeping that in mind we encourage children as young as three and between three and five is a good time to start to instill that routine of coming to the dentist every six months and hopefully as they grow and that becomes habit building that when they’re no longer under their guidance of a parent or guardian that they’ll continue to see a dentist every six months.

And continue to have their teeth cleaned and continue to look after their gums.
