TOOTH EXTRACTION
Dental Extractions
At Fullarton Park Dental we take every care to protect, repair and save all teeth, however occasionally the only option is to extract problematic teeth.
Dental extractions are performed for a variety of reasons, including tooth decay that renders a tooth non-restorable, impacted wisdom tooth removal and the need to make room for orthodontic treatment.
A lot of extractions are straightforward and simple however some can be difficult which require extra attention, care and planning.
An X-ray will often show whether a tooth extraction will prove difficult and your Dentist can then explain your extraction options to you.
At Fullarton Park Dental we are fortunate that Dr Michael Filosi has a special interest in dental extractions and has had extra training and experience in this field and is very proficient at removing teeth as easily and comfortably as possible for you.
If you need a tooth extracted or want to discuss options or alternatives, please don’t hesitate to give our friendly team a call on (08) 8272 5271.
Frequently Asked Questions
While you can return to normal activities with most simple extractions after 2-3 days the soft tissue in the area can take 3-4 weeks to completely heal and you should be mindful of the area. Some more complex extractions especially those with sutures can take 2-3 weeks to feel normal.
Over the first 24 hours the pain should subside and the extraction site fill with a clot. Some pain and light residual bleeding is normal as the local anaesthetic wears off. If the pain is severe or the bleeding heavy then it is best to contact the clinic for assessment.
While all effort is taken to retain teeth for patients, sometimes if a tooth becomes infected and root canal is not an option the next best option is to remove the tooth as the source of infection and replace the tooth with either an implant, bridge or plate (denture). Other reasons to consider getting a tooth removed are a broken tooth that is not able to be restored or if an orthodontist advises to remove a tooth as part of a plan with braces to straighten your teeth. Our team of Dentists are best to advise the most conservative approach to maintain as many natural teeth as possible.
